Building a Clearer Picture of Major Accident Risk

How Anasuria Operating Company and Empirisys connected process safety data to give teams a clearer view of barrier health and Major Accident Hazard risk.

The Goal: Turn data into risk intelligence

Anasuria Operating Company (AOC) already monitored the integrity of its hardware barriers using Process Safety Performance Indicators (PSPIs), but wanted to make better use of the information it already held.

‍

Working together, AOC and Empirisys set out to give teams a clearer understanding of barrier health, what was driving changes in status and where attention was most needed, supporting better risk-based decisions.
‍

The Project: Building a clearer risk picture

AOC operates in the offshore energy sector, where understanding the condition of safety-critical equipment and the barriers protecting against major accident hazards is an important part of process safety management.
‍
Empirisys worked with AOC to develop an interactive Hardware Barrier Model, bringing together information from across AOC's operational systems and connecting it to safety-critical equipment, SECEs, hardware barriers and MAH scenarios. This gave AOC a clearer line of sight from its overall risk picture back to the operational information behind it.

‍
The Process: Connecting data to major hazards

AOC and Empirisys combined operational knowledge, engineering expertise and data science to turn information held across different systems into one connected view.

‍

Key Results:

Greater visibility. Better decisions.

Less manual reporting

Operational data brought together and updated daily.

‍

‍See what drives barrier status

Trace issues back to the equipment and information behind them.

‍

‍Understand cumulative risk

See where multiple barrier issues affect the same MAH scenario.

‍

‍More consistent assessment

Agreed criteria provide a clearer basis for barrier status.

The Challenge: Seeing what drives barrier status

AOC's existing process provided a high-level view of barrier integrity, but the information needed to create that picture sat across several systems and had to be manually brought together for monthly reporting. PSPIs were mainly viewed at barrier level, making it harder to see the equipment and information driving the overall status.

‍

Deciding the RAG status of a barrier could also rely on judgement and discussion. AOC wanted a more consistent way to understand the information and focus conversations on the risk itself.

‍

The Outcome: A clearer view of risk

The Hardware Barrier Model gives AOC a clearer view of barrier health and the information behind it. Teams can see where a barrier is degraded and trace this back through the relevant SECEs and equipment to understand what is contributing to the status.
‍

AOC can also view risk by MAH scenario, helping teams see where issues across several barriers may be contributing to the same major accident scenario. This gives them a view of cumulative risk that was not previously available.

Daily updates also reduce the need to manually pull figures together for reporting, giving teams more time to understand the information and act on it.
‍

The Future: Building on the foundation

AOC is continuing to embed the Hardware Barrier Model into its reporting practices.

‍

‍‍The next stage will look at improving trending, refining the risk criteria and developing the dashboard further. There is also potential longer term to connect Barrier Model information with P&IDs and explore how AI could support the analysis of performance-standard documentation.

"Instead of spending time pulling information together, we can spend time acting on it.”
